Hood River, OR—Ribs, steaks, asparagus and other things delicious when barbequed are available at the Gorge Grown Farmers’ Market this Thursday at the Hood River Middle School from 4-7 PM. People planning to celebrate Memorial Day with friends and family can get their food supplies direct from local food artisans and farmers at the market. Underwood Alpacas will be conducting a sheering demonstration at the Market this Thursday, and 4H will be setting up a petting zoo.

The musical guest this week is the Cascade Locks Youth Choir.

With election season wrapping up, Gorge Grown is asking for election sign donations at the information booth this week. They will be repurposed for market advertising lawn signs. You can drop your signs off at the information booth.

Receivers of SNAP benefits (food stamps) can double their buying power at the Gorge Grown Farmers’ Market thanks to Gorge Grown’s farmers’ market incentive program. SNAP users will have their benefits matched dollar-for-dollar up five dollars. They can also buy vegetable starts with their benefits, and there are several vendors selling starts at the market. If shoppers forget to bring enough cash, they can use their debit cards can get redeemable market tokens good with any vendor at the market. Inquiries about SNAP, WIC and debit card purchases can be made at the information booth.

May has turned out to be a successful month for the farmers’ market, and Gorge Grown is pleased the farmers were eager to open early for the 2012 season (previous seasons began in June). Gorge Grown has a vision for a year-round farmers’ market in the Gorge, and the success of the early market season is one step toward this vision. T

he Gorge Grown Farmers’ Market is every Thursday until November 15 from 4-7 pm at the Hood River Middle School. In addition to fresh local produce there are wood-fired pizzas, wraps, bratwursts, salads, coffee, lemonade, and tarts. The market also provides picnic blankets for anybody interested in lounging on the Middle School’s lawn. Live music & children’s activities featured weekly!
